Leg 5: Telegraph Cove to Port Hardy (June 5)

Navigator: Bryan Fulton
Course length: 28.7 Nautical Miles (Full) / 22.7 NM (Shortened Course)
Start Time: 0730 Hrs. It is highly recommended to be out of Telegraph Cove NLT 0630 due to the low tide.

Start Line: Between the committee’s orange inflatable buoy on shore, approx. 100 meters NNE of the Telegraph Cove entrance, and an orange Van Isle 360 flag on a pin boat off Ella Point. clip_image002
Section 1: Start Head for Alert Bay on south side of Cormorant Island. Passing the bay, look for beacon/lights(2) on south side of the channel. These mark the shallows but are in deeper water. Look out for ferry traffic going to/from Alert Bay clip_image004
Section 2: Exiting the passage head for the north side of Haddington Island. There is a traffic separation zone around the island, counter-clockwise. Red beacon/lights(2) on north side of the channel mark submerged rocks. clip_image006
Section 3: Exiting this passage use caution for ferry traffic crossing from Port McNeill to Sointula. Proceed due West through the Broughton Strait. There is a kelp patch East of the Red light after exiting the Strait.
Section 4: Head for Dillion point and Masterman Islands before rounding towards Port Hardy. Passing Masterman Islands, make 5 mile out call. clip_image008
Section 4A: Head for alternate finish, on a line formed by the bearing 200 degrees to the point northwest of the airport clip_image010
Finish Line: Between a yellow inflatable on the VanIsle vehicle on the Govt. dock and an orange inflatable buoy due east at the gazebo in front of the fish processor.

  1. Pretty cool adventure, Greg! Linda sent me the link and I had a chance to watch some of the YouTube video… Looks like you’ve done a fair amount of engineering already. Wanted to mention that I know this guy who doesn’t know a whole lot about sailing, but is pretty good with all things mechanical…Maybe he’d be a good crew addition on another trip!
